Dr. W. David Richardson Biography

 

W. David Richardson is director of orchestras at the Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science, and Technology (GSMST). Richardson has a bachelor of science degree in music education from David Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tennessee, and a master of music education and doctor of musical arts in conducting degrees from the University of Georgia (UGA). Following graduation from Lipscomb, Richardson held the position of director of bands and orchestra at Greater Atlanta Christian School in Norcross, Georgia, taught in the Augusta, Georgia/Aiken, South Carolina area, served as adjunct music education faculty at Piedmont College in Demorest, Georgia, and most recently was honored to serve as visiting faculty at Emory University conducting the Emory Wind Ensemble for the Spring semester of 2012.

Upon returning to Gwinnett County in 2004, Richardson grew the orchestra program at Meadowcreek High School from thirty-five students to eighty students in three years and established the vision for GSMST’s Music Department in 2007 where 40 percent of the school participates in the music program. His ensembles have consistently received the highest rankings, including the GSMST Honor Orchestra's "Best String Section" award at the Grand National Adjudicators Invitational in 2012, Best Orchestra Performance at the WorldStrides New York City Heritage Festival in 2013, receiving rave reviews at the 2014 National Invitational Band and Orchestra Festival at Carnegie Hall, and taking 2nd place in the orchestra division at the 2015 Festival Disney competition. In April 2011, he directed the GSMST Honor Orchestra’s first international performance at Yangzhou University, China, and has lead GSMST’s orchestras to participate in their first consortium commission of a work by Emory professor Richard Prior.

Richardson’s duties while serving as a graduate assistant at UGA included directing the university concert bands and basketball band; guest conducting the wind symphony, symphony band, and symphonic band; and assisting with conducting classes and the award-winning Redcoat Marching Band. He was also responsible for the design and production of band publications including CD covers and brochures; promotion of the university music program; and CD recording, production, and editing for the UGA Wind Symphony’s Grammy Award–nominated CDs. During his time at UGA, Richardson was awarded the School of Music Director’s Excellence Award and was inducted into Pi Kappa Lambda, the National Music Honor Society.

Richardson has studied conducting with Yoel Levi, Allen Crowell, and Mark Cedel, among others; he has performed with ensembles like the Savannah River Winds; and his article titled Original Secular Works for Band and Chorus was published in The Instrumentalist magazine in May 2006. Professional assocations past and present include the American String Teachers Association, the Professional Association of Georgia Educators, MENC, and the Georgia Music Educators Association.
